FLORIDA BUILDING COMMISSION

Accessibility TAC

July 10, 2006

Discussion of Hotel Charette : Preliminary planning was started on the hotel charette and possible problems were identified including hotel staff training, emergency evacuation, pool access and interior design. Members are to send additional suggestions to staff for consideration.

Presentation of Miniature Golf Issues : A presentation was given visually depicting accessibility problems with a miniature golf course. The project had previously received a waiver from vertical accessibility to all holes; however, many obstacles were present that could potentially be dangerous.

Discussion of Detectable Warnings : Dean Perkins of DOT presented the most recent design requirements as a result of directives from the Federal Highway Administration. Many local governments are requiring use of these standards on private property. The only way this would be permitted is submittal of a locally adopted code amendment filed with the Department of Community Affairs.

Fire Code/Accessibility Code : The TAC is continuing to coordinate with the State Fire Marshal who has expressed a desire for a joint meeting with the TAC.

Goals and Objectives . During the course of discussion of future goals, the TAC expressed concern that there is now no method of obtaining a binding interpretation of the code as well as the fact that the only way the code can be changed is through legislative action.
