Supplement to Petition For Declaratory Statement Before the Florida Building Commission for EPOX-Z Cool Roof Coating Products – DS 2011-096

The purpose of this document is to clarify the use and installation instructions for the EPOX-Z NRG Cool Roof Coating. There has been some confusion as to whether or not we are a roofing system because of our detailed instructions.

We are not a roofing system. We are a thin coating that is approximately the thickness of a matchbook cover. We coat existing roofing systems, not create a new roofing system.

There are two separate and distinct aspects to installing the EPOX-Z NRG coating. The first aspect is to make sure that the roof is in condition to be coated. Every roof whether coated with our product or any of the elastomeric coatings on the market needs to be in good condition in order to be coated. No coating can be applied to a crumbling membrane, one with trapped water, gaping holes, etc.

The installation instructions that deal with roof preparation are solely designed to make sure that the roof is in good enough shape to be coated so the coating will be successful. Repairing the roof is done by licensed roofers in the case where the roof needs repairs but this roof preparation should not be confused with the application of our coating. In many cases, the roof is in perfect condition and none of the roof preparation instructions apply.

The second aspect of the installation is the actual coating itself. Those instructions are very basic. Mix Part A and B, pour it on the roof, squeegee it with a 10 mil notched squeegee and roll it on.

Our EPOX-Z NRG is designed to reflect the sun and heat away from the roof surface and is a Cool Roof Coating. Because of its unique formulation, it also helps to keep the water out of the building and preserve the existing roof membrane. It is however not a roofing system, not a waterproofing system, nor a roofing membrane.
