Opening and Meeting Attendance

The meeting started at 9:00 AM, and it was determined that a quorum of Hurricane Research advisory Committee members were present.

 

Following were the HRAC members present:

The Workgroup voted unanimously, 6 - 0 in favor, to approve the October 13, 2008 Facilitator’s

Summary Report as presented.

 

 

Presentation by ARA on Load Side—Wind Pressure Research

Peter Vickery, ARA, presented a PowerPoint presentation on load side wind pressure research and answered member’s questions. A overview of the presentation is included as Attachment 2 of this Report.

Proposed ASCE 7- 2010 Design Wind Speed and Windborne Debris Criteria

Peter Vickery, ARA, presented a PowerPoint presentation on ASCE 7- 2010 Design Wind Speed and Windborne Debris Criteria and answered member’s questions. A overview of the presentation is included as Attachment 4 of this Report.

Wind-Borne Debris (WBD)/Terrain Modeling

Larry Twisdale and Peter Vickery, ARA, presented a PowerPoint presentation on wind-borne debris terrain modeling and answered member’s questions. The research was funded by FBC and is a follow-up to WBD research studies. A overview of the presentation is included as Attachment 5 of this Report.

Discussion on Additional Research Supporting Hurricane Resistant Construction Standards Development

Rick Dixon reported that DCA has funding to continue the UF contract for research projects for FY 08/09. The research is focusing on testing regarding shutter impact, mulled windows, and roofing.

Next Steps

The HRAC will meet in early 2009 to continue monitoring research projects.

It is unlikely that a practical paint specification can be developed in the short term to address micro-cracking stucco issues as the relationships among water vapor permeability, mil thickness and elasticity are not known. It is recommended that these relationships be explored and that until these relationships are understood the Florida Building Code not be altered to require “elastomeric paints” on stucco renderings.

Conduct R&D on water penetration, absorption and transport through concrete and masonry wall assemblies to establish criteria for coatings or other water control measures.
